School Grounds Topic - Tree Project
Unfortunately, a large pine tree on the school grounds had to be felled. In order to reduce waste, we made it our mission to reuse all the tree to benefit the school and its surroundings. We commissioned Les Langley, local chainsaw carver, to carve an amazing story chair in our infant outdoor area from the base of the tree. The children enjoyed watching the progress of the tree as the design took shape. They were able to see and learn about the inner workings of trees by looking at the rings and the sap distribution on the inside of the bark.
Some of the remaining wood has also been made into a bench for the infant play area, a sign for our year one Beatrix Potter themed garden and candle holders which are to be sold to raise additional funds for the school. We will be using the wood chip from the tree to form a base in our secret garden area and the remaining wood to create seating for outdoor learning. We will also be planting two more fruit trees this spring to replace the one that has been felled.
